If we truly believed that photography should always be straight, meaning without photographic manipulation, not only would it be impossible to make photographs (we manipulate through exposure, composition, framing, shutter speed, etc.) but all the credit of the captured images would need to be given to the creator of the the landscapes and not the individual who recorded the landscapes through the lens of a camera.
In other words, when viewing an image of Michelangelo’s David do we think of the image maker or the maker of the sculpture?
The photographer plays an important role as creator as artist. It is, therefore, important that we understand the influence the photographer has in making his or her images and the profound ability each maintains in the process of contributing to the arts.
