The Northern California Nevada Cycling Association makes up the governing body of a competitive series of bicycle racing events throughout Northern California and Nevada. With some of the highest ranked pros racing in this association, you can expect the competition to be tough and the talent to run deep. Top pro competitors such as Levi Leipheimer, Chris Horner, Fred Rodriguez (Fast Freddy), Ben Jacques-Maynes and other fast guys like Dan Martin, Christopher Phipps, Larry Nolan, and Joel Robertson round out one of the most competitive cycling associations in the United States.
For the first time in seven years the Best All-round Rider (BAR) Leader’s Jersey is back. This time around it has a new face and a new purpose. In any given race the leader of this highly competitive series will be seen wearing his or her jersey in any road race or criterium event. To usher this new jersey-clad group of 11 top riders (one per category) is Williams Wheel Systems, this year’s sole sponsor of the BAR series.
Trefethen Studios was fortunate to have the opportunity to design the BAR Jersey for 2010. Below is our process of working with Keith at Williams Wheels to come up with a design that he and his company would be proud to sponsor.
Step 1: Research | Define the status quo
This step is reserved for generating new ideas. In order to start the design process we begin by collecting ideas. The goal is to first identify the client’s aspirations. We will then sketch a few ideas with the aim of incorporating a select few of the more popular patterns. We then spiral outward, sketching and problem solving with the aim of brainstorming solutions that are unexpected.
This is where you (the customer) come in. We will ask you to upload 3 or 4 sample images that inspire you. The image samples can be specific to cycling (other team designs) or taken from other sports, like formula one racing as an example.
Step 2: Collection | By narrowing the scope we arrive at a direction
This step is all about tossing out the worst and keeping the best. We will then present those solutions as rough concepts in order to establish a direction.
Step 3: Semi-comp | Through refinement we arrive at focus
This step takes into consideration the aspirations and desires, post collection-meeting. From this point forward the refinement of design, clean type, actual color, and balance begin to take form.
Step 4: Finals | From focus to polished chrome
This step removes anomalies in design and circles back; checking completion against client aspirations and direction only to arrive at a final production. We then work directly with the production company on your behalf. During this process, we ensure expected results through matching patterns with design comps. Upon completion of production, images are posted as comparisons to what was illustrated in the previous step 3.
